Congratulations to pianist Yaru Wu from China on receiving the Second Prize in the Professional (No age limit) category at the UK International Music Competition – 2026 Season 1, held during the season period from 30 October 2025 to 30 January 2026. Following this wonderful achievement, Yaru shared her thoughts on preparation, performance, musical growth, and the experiences that have shaped her journey as a musician.
When reflecting on how she prepares for recording an online competition performance, she explained:
"Before I start recording, I like to give myself a little time to settle in. I usually set up the camera in advance so I can get used to it being there. Once I stop paying attention to the camera, recording feels much more natural. I think we often try to make everything perfect and want every video to be flawless, but I’ve learned to let go of that a little."
Offering advice to young pianists and aspiring musicians, she shared:
"I enjoy every chance to perform because every stage is an opportunity to learn and grow. Of course, opportunities usually come to people who are well prepared."
Music has been a meaningful part of Yaru’s life from an early age. Speaking about her personal journey and future goals, she said:
"I’ve been playing the piano since I was four years old, so practising has always been part of my daily life. I hope I never stop playing. My goal is to become a better pianist and piano teacher, and to share what I’ve learned with my students while continuing to learn and grow together with them."
Among the many experiences that have influenced her musical development, her first competition remains especially memorable:
"I entered my first piano competition when I was eight. Before the competition, my dad told me, “The most important thing is taking part. Winning isn’t everything, and neither is losing.” That competition meant a lot to me because it was my first one, and it also brought me my first achievement—I won second place."
Looking back on her competition experience, she expressed gratitude for the opportunities, growth, and support she has received along the way:
"Competitions have given me a lot more than just awards. They’ve given me valuable experiences and helped me grow. There are so many people I’d like to thank, especially my parents, my teachers, and myself."
Through her reflections, Yaru shows a sincere and mature understanding of music-making: that competitions are not only about recognition, but also about learning, resilience, preparation, and continued artistic growth.
